As part of its role, Puzl proposes this free SEO guide, advising its members on how to benefit from its tool to attain a high search engine ranking. Today’s guide focuses on an important part of your website; text formatting and the use of the text editing options placed at your disposal to improve your site’s online visibility.

So what is a Heading tag?

Heading tags (also referred to as H Tags) are standard HTML elements used to define headings and subheadings on a web page. They have been developed not only to assist formatting but to provide information to search engines on the structural hierarchy of a document and therefore its content. Heading tags are divided into several types ranging from H1 to H6. The H1 tag defines the most important heading on the page (usually the largest or boldest, too), whereas H6 indicates the lowest-level heading.

Important note: The higher the heading tag is, the more weight the text gets. Be careful not to repeat titles or randomly skip heading levels.

The importance of Your Headings to ImproveSEO

Search engines focus on the words in your headings because they expect them to include clues to the page’s main topics. For those reasons, you need to include keywords inside your Headings; a keyword being a word which is regularly repeated on your site and best defines what an internet user would type in a search engine when looking for a product or service you are providing.

Heading tags are important not only to provide your pages with an outline, defining the paragraph that follows, but also to help search engines properly understand their relevance.

How should Heading tags be used?

Each H Tag has a different weight and therefore different rules apply when using.

Considering the greatest importance of the H1 tag, get familiar with the rules below to help you use it properly rapidly attaining high SEO results.

Ideally, each page of your website should have a unique H1 tag. Using multiple H1 tags on a given web page could be considered spamming by Google amongst other search engines.

  • Since search engines focus and give a greater value to the text inside H1 tags, try to keep it optimized and well-descriptive in terms of page content.
  • The H1 heading should be the top-level heading on your page, and there should only be one on every page.
  • You should not place H1 tags inside the header section of your website as this would mean reproducing the same title for every page of your website.
  • Regardless of the common standards accepted, if your page has a lot of different sections, you can divide it with more than H1 tags. However for SEO it's better to create separate pages for content that you want to call out with separate H1 headings.

The different heading tags Proposed by Puzl’s text editor

Heading text block is to be used in the Header of your site and for design purposes mainly. When using Puzl’s editor, you might wonder why you are only able to select font styles from predefined text blocks. The answer: this is done to not only help you attain better SEO results but also maintain a unity of design across your site; other widgets already using a style of typography.

  • Page Title – equals H1 Tag – the H1 tag defines the most important heading on the page, boasting more weight in the search results than H4 text. It indicates your main topic.
  • Title – acting as H2 Tag – it creates subtopics and reflects on the main page structure as a Section Heading. You may use as many Titles as you wish on a given page.
  • Subtitle – it plays the role of H3 Tag – and refers as a Paragraph Heading. It must be a short and concise description of the content treated under them.
  • Section title – being the H4 Tag it’s a forth level heading, designed to help the content fit and just slightly highlight a paragraph to make the text easier to scan.

Other H tags

Tags are available up to H6 but Puzl only focuses on heading tags from H1 to H4 since the importance of the rest is small enough to be ignored.

How should you write your titles?

The title should be an accurate statement of context; the H1 should clearly define what the page is about; and the heading levels should assist all users as they determine the structure of your content.  Titles need to be unique and provide content with clarity.

The system goes as follows:

  1. Start with a term best defining what your business is or does
  2. Include an element related to the specific content of your page
  3. Adding a geographical focus is often a good idea if it applies to your site

Puzl team believes that Page Title/H1 tag feature is a great asset ensuring your better online visibility. Be careful to use your header tags accurately and search engines will reward you accordingly.
